Amazon's autonomous vehicle subsidiary Zoox is expanding its testing operations to Washington, D.C., marking its eighth U.S. city for self-driving trials. The company has deployed safety-driver-equipped SUVs to conduct manual mapping ahead of planned autonomous testing by year-end.
Washington's complex urban environment—featuring traffic circles, heavy pedestrian flow, and variable weather—provides an ideal stress test for Zoox's technology. This follows the company's landmark achievement in Las Vegas, where it launched the first purpose-built driverless taxi service earlier this year.
